Luck just isn’t enough (part 1 of 2)

Written by on June 14, 2014 in Learning to Breathe - 16 Comments

When I close my eyes and look at the big picture of my life at the moment, it looks so different from how I expected it to so many years ago when I set out with wide eyes wide open into the working world upon graduating university.

If I look at my life, I have to say that I’ve had a streak of good luck that has run through it. I was lucky with genetics, lucky with my family background, lucky enough to have a good education, lucky to be able to afford to live pretty much how I’d want to, lucky to go to a good graduate program and to meet my husband who was even luckier than me (especially in his career), lucky to be able to send my own kids to private school so that they could have an even better life than I did, and so on. I’ve been lucky.

Occasionally, I’ve had to work for things of course. I had to work somewhat at school to get good grades, I had to work a little to get hired for the jobs I’ve held, and I had to work somewhat in my marriage and with my kids (though we all know how that marriage part went from this blog). However, if I’m honest with myself, in my youth, I pretty much woke up, showed up, and rode on my luck quite often. Up to a certain point, that was good enough. I was able to get away with a certain degree of laziness and sweep it away under the carpet — like the little bit of dirt you don’t want your friends to see, but you also can’t completely clean away.

I don’t know when it happened exactly, but at some point it became obvious that I couldn’t just rest on genetics and a natural small bone structure and super metabolism to keep me slim. I had to actually work a little bit. Especially after giving birth to two kids, the luck of a good figure wouldn’t be enough anymore. So, I went to the gym more. Luckily I’ve always enjoyed exercising, so that wasn’t an issue. But some years later that wasn’t enough either and I had to actually watch my intake of food. That was more difficult and took an inner discipline which, luckily, I’ve always possessed. With work and discipline, I was able to keep my figure intact. Phew, one issue passed. But that was just the first issue.

Stay tuned for next month’s entry (part 2 of 2) where I realise that “Luck just isn’t enough” to get by for very long…
