We Are Moving

Written by on May 9, 2012 in Learning to Breathe - 15 Comments

And the universe said,

“It’s time to go.”

“But I’m not ready yet,” we responded.

Life only smiled in response,

“One never is.”

In life, everything is constantly moving. Time is moving forward, usually much too fast for us to manage to keep up. But, sometimes, when we are little, it may feel as if it’s moving too slowly and we wish to rush it forward. When we’re very young, being older seems so much nicer than being little. It is only later, when we’re actually older, that we come to realise just how good we had it then when we were little. As we get older, time seems to always be moving one step ahead of us. If we could find that magic switch to stop it for a moment, or at least to slow it down a bit, we would likely push it immediately without a second thought. Well, at least I would.

But time waits for no one. Alas. And life doesn’t usually stop when we want it to. Luckily, though, for some at least, it brings ample opportunity for growth.

When we’re little, we are always being bombarded with more and more information that we soak up like little sponges eager to learn as much as possible. We grow in hours almost as much as in days, and our perspective changes almost as quickly as our mind takes things in. We are constantly moving forward in our knowledge and in our learning. As adults, that learning and growth isn’t quite as tremendous or noticeable, but it is still there. Or, maybe better put, it is available for those who want it. The older we become, the more set in our ways we get of course. So it is more difficult to shape and change us as we grow to be adults. But it is nevertheless certainly very possible. Some go backwards as they get older, getting completely stuck in their ways and in their lives and fighting to stop growth from taking over them. But life won’t stop just because we want it to. We haven’t yet found that switch to make it go at the pace that we’re comfortable to move in.

So opportunity for growth is as much out there as opportunity for adaptation to life’s constant movement forward. Big life changes, for example, can bring about tremendous changes in character. If we want to bring about those changes of course. We need to want to improve ourselves and to move, in effect, to a new place to be able to get there.

In this way, I am now moving. I am moving physically. In fact, I am moving house soon. Me and my daughters will be living somewhere smaller, but better in a way. It is our opportunity to begin anew, such as moving always allows. I am also moving spiritually. In the past few years since my divorce, I have gone through complete and utter changes in my character and my belief systems. I moved quite a lot when I married as well. My ex husband was fundamental to that movement. He was the first person who told it to me “as it was” so to speak. Because of him, I worked quite a bit on my character up to a point that I could with him as my partner. But there was still quite a lot of work to be done. I am doing that work now, since my divorce, as sometimes it takes separation from what we have adapted to, to force ourselves to adapt and change again. And moving, as something that happens everyday, even if we choose to ignore it, so does our opportunity for personal spiritual movement. It is always out there waiting for us to take the unlimited chances that are constantly being given. After all, if it is not for improving ourselves in this lifetime that we are here, then what is it for?

I have moved thus. My family, the people closest to me and most aware of my constant movement of character, say to me each time they see me (we live in two different continents now so seeing each other is something that needs to be planned) that it is amazing just how much I’ve changed from who I was years ago to who I am now. Some do not believe in people’s ability to change. I think of myself as a character witness for exactly that ability. I am so very different now than I was all those years ago that sometimes I find my actions in the past (or my lack of action on occasion) as something I find difficult to understand the reason for. We all have a constant opportunity to change. There are many, of course, who prefer not to take this opportunity. I also probably had moments of just wanting to escape rather than to question my own flaws of character. But I have chosen instead to listen to the voices of the people around me and the messages they send. And when I listened, I heard many of the same messages. I have chosen to change. I have chosen to espouse movement and to ride its momentum forward because, in fact, I do believe that my time here in this life is meant to be spent on improving myself. Otherwise, why bother?

This blog is moving too. Just as I have been moving to improve myself and have listened to the voices of the people spouting criticism and compliments and allowing them to help me understand just which qualities I could improve upon and which I could use more to my advantage, so this blog too will be moving as I have listed to people again, and I have also listened to my own instincts and my own voice. I will not stop writing it, as there is still quite a story to be told, and I am one to always like telling a story. But the story I initially wanted to tell needs a new place to be told from. And the story I want to tell here, and have been telling, in effect, should not be hampered by an inaccurate title and by a completely different voice that doesn’t mix appropriately with it. So this current blog is moving to be called a new name, in fact. One more appropriate to the topic I like to write about here. It now will be called “Learning to Breathe”, as I grow and learn every day, as we all should, to really, truly breathe: to breathe in the air around me; to breath in a sort of contented happiness; to breathe in an energy to drive me forward; to breathe in the simple easy pleasure of being a mother and of spending quality time with my children; to breathe in a determination to make something out of what I am and what I have; and just to breathe in everything that is simple and that is here and that we all should be thankful for.

And the blog that I had originally intended to write will also be moving, the one that used to be the title of this one. It will have its own space soon, unhampered by anything but my imagination. It will grow to be even more preposterously fictionalised than I’d initially intended. But that’s what makes it fun. It will be my little experiment and I will just allow it to flow. If you look for it, in a number of months perhaps, or maybe in a number of weeks — well, you may even find it…

There are actually certainly a good deal of particulars like that to take into consideration. That’s a fantastic point to bring up. I offer you the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are actually questions like the 1 you bring up where one of the most significant factor will probably be operating in honest superior faith. I don?t know if ideal practices have emerged about things like that, but I am certain that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls really feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.
